A Colorful Thread: December 2022
Weaving together my life as a maker and other spheres of life.

On My Mind
Experimenting:: with new Christmas traditions. Sometimes changes is difficult, especially when it involves the holidays. This Christmas was our first without Aria at home, as she chose to spend the holiday with her boyfriend in America. Some traditions continue, like our annual sugar cookie bakeoff on Christmas Eve (Elora just learned how to roll out the dough!). Others, are brand new, like sharing Christmas dinner with good friends, a la “gourmetten” a Dutch food tradition.
Only time shall tell which traditions stick. Holding ourselves open to the new is how we bend instead of break, in the face of change.
Reading:: Ik Zal je Nooit Meer by Tatjana Alumni, this month’s book club choice. I very much enjoyed reading it in Dutch, the original language. It’s really beautifully written, brimming with honest emotion and personal discovery. I found it quite thought provoking. The topics at hand are motherhood, trauma and grieving - so no light read, but definitely meaningful.
Celebrating:: my book! Ok, it’s been out a few years, but it’s fun to see it still popping up now and then online. This pretty photo is from @TheFabricChic, a Maryland quilt shop who suggested that The Quilter’s Field Guide to Color would make a fun and unique Christmas gift. As a matter of fact, I’ve mailed a few signed copies to folks who purchased them as gifts. Fun!
FYI: Gotham Quilts is launching a Color Journey based on my book. This online club is to be a year-long exploration of color. Maybe something for you?
Anticipating:: beginning the Circus Cabin sew-along! I sooooo can’t wait to start sewing this scrap quilt. I LOVE scrap quilting, and I remember this one being totally satisfying to sew. So surprisingly easy! Right now easy sounds good.
The new year is almost upon us. I wish you that sense of renewal and hope that January can bring. May we create with joy and live with love.
xoxo,
Rachel
