A Colorful Thread: July 2022

Weaving together my life as a maker and other spheres of life.

On My Mind

Anticipating:: Starting a new quilt today! I’ve been craving green, so that is a must. I browsed my Inspiration/Color menu tab to remind myself of favorite green color combos. Soft Botanical is a particularly lovely one, but I’m craving something a bit more intense.

This is my green collage from Bold Monochromatic. Green + white is a fantastic feeling at this time of year. Yes, this feels right, plus a select few punchy colors - - - And the fun begins!

Reading:: The Big Book of Beasts by Yuval Zommer.

I love-love-love reading aloud to children, but sometimes I loose steam with non-fiction books. This year Elora is hungry for nature non-fiction.

We’re both enjoying the Big Book series by Yuval Zommer. The illustrations are lovely and the facts are just the right balance of foundational and fun. If you have a little one ages 4-8, I recommend the series (which is available in English and in Dutch!).

We own the Blue book and have the Beasts book from the library. I’d love to read them all.

Ready for a new, slow-stitching project? The Small Change quilt pattern is a downloadable pdf with 3 hexie quilt patterns in one! Inspired by the popular hexie designs of the 1930s, the Small Change quilts include all the fun and beauty of hexagon blocks, without the job of sewing the blocks together!

Start with ease as these patterns use 1” hexagons or 2” diamonds, shapes you might already have or could print and cut yourself.

Get cozy and enjoy!

Celebrating:: a jewel of a Geesey quilt by @QuiltKat. These lovely, rich colors already make me feel cozy. I was just considering returning to the Geesey quilt pattern, actually, for my next quilt. It’s a great one for presenting an array of fabrics and colors from a curated fabric pull. Kat, your choices are superb!

Remembering::  our first visit to the northern region of The Netherlands. This summer we spent a few days in the Friesland province, exploring Leeuwarden, Dokkum and Ameland. It is a lovely land.

I hope that you are enjoying these in between months wherever you find yourself in the world. Soon a new season begins, with new tasks, challenges and pleasures.

Sometimes the in betweens are restful and restorative. Other times they leave me feeling off-balance, and I crave the steady rhythm of “normal” instead. In August I hope to enjoy both my work and our extra time at home as a family before the school season begins again. It is our last month before Aria goes off to Germany. I wish I could capture each sweet moment, but in reality I am only invited to live them once. Let us live our moments well.

xoxo,

Rachel
